Interview of Cricket Fans – 44 – Bangladesh

Thank you so much for your participation in this interview, how did you fall in love with Cricket, tell us a bit about your early days associated with this sport. Also, how is it like growing up in Bangladesh where Cricket is a very popular sport there?

May be from my birth. Because my mother always said that when I have started walking, I always want to go field. When my family members were watching cricket on TV, every time I had joined them. My father is a Cricket fan. In fact, I have hardly missed going to the field and watch any cricket match, and if there is Bangladesh’s match, then I have never missed it. And here in Bangladesh, every kid is growing up in a cricket-based environment.

Have you been fortunate enough to watch an international match live in a stadium?

Yes, I am lucky enough. It was 2012, West Indies tour of Bangladesh, and one of Test series was held in Sheikh Abu Naser Stadium, Khulna. And back then, I was a cricketer of a Cricket Academy. So, my coach gave me a First Day Ticket. To be honest I was very much excited before the match day night. And our Abul Hasan Raju made a record that day. As a number ten batsman, he made 2nd highest Score (113) in Cricket History. In fact, Raju was the only 2nd Cricketer who scored Century in test cricket as number ten batsman. So it made my special day more special.

What do you like the most about Bangladesh Cricket?

I like everything about Bangladesh Cricket. But to be honest, after 2015 WC, the mindset that has been set by our team is something that I like the most. In fact, after that World Cup, Bangladesh Team made several changes and these are the real reasons why current team now. Mashrafe Mortaza, our ex-captain did an excellent job and made our team what it is right now. And our cricketers played from their heart and another thing is their attitude. The young Cricketers are mentally strong and they are always ready to fight for the team in any given situation.

Bangladesh has so many stalwarts in their team, Mashrafe Mortaza, Mushfiqur Rahim, Shakib Al Hasan, Tamim Iqbal, Abdur Razzak to name a few. How much will this inspire the youngsters across the country to pick up the bat or ball and play this sport?

Well, the Cricketers you have mentioned are truly inspirational for each and every Bangladeshi young cricketer. They have regularly performed for Bangladesh in International Cricket and as well as Domestic Cricket. And here in Bangladesh practice environment outside Dhaka is not so much well. These cricketers came from outside Dhaka and made themselves an inspiration for upcoming young cricketers. When they were young, there is no particular inspiration or Idol in our Cricket history. But now they are the inspiration of youngers. Our Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina told our biggest Superstar, Shakib al Hasan, a few months ago that before we told our cricketers about Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, or any other successful cricketers story to inspire them but now we have Shakib Al Hasan. This sentence made the answer to your question. And our Senior Cricketers are very much helpful. They are always ready to help them

How much will Shakib Al Hasan’s ban from international cricket hurt Bangladesh? He was truly at his peak, wasn’t he?

Ya..It is a piece of Huge bad news for Us. He is our biggest superstar and as well as best cricketer in our history. But to be honest, because of Covid19 pandemic, we haven’t missed him so much. And I have to say that this pandemic was quite a blessing for Bangladesh Cricket. Because when your best player is out of cricket then you have to face a lot of problems but Covid save us from these problems. And after this break, we expected Shakib Al Hasan to be more dangerous than before.

Bangladesh have plenty of batsmen who have brought stability in their team, what about the bowlers? Mention some of your favourite bowlers.

Our bowling department is not as good as our batting department. And you know that our team is mainly dependent on spin bowling for many days. Mohammad Rafique, Enamul Haque Junior, Abdur Razzak and Obviously Shakib al Hasan are our best spinners. And Left-arm spinners are always dominating our bowling department.  But I think days are changing. Mashrafe Mortaza, who is one of our best captains has served the team for 15-20 years. Now  I hope Mustafiz, Taskin, Rahi will lead our pace attack. Mohammad Rafique whom I have to mention, made an excellent contribution in Bangladesh Cricket. At the age of 30, he made his test debut and score 1000+ runs and took 100+ wickets also. But if you talk about my favourite then I choose Mashrafe Bin Mortaza and Shakib Al Hasan.

Your thoughts on Bangladesh-India rivalry? This rivalry has become intense lately, don’t you think?

I think it’s started after 2015 World Cup quarter-final. Ya before then Bangladesh had beaten India for some time but India mostly dominated over Bangladesh on the field. But After the 2015 WC, it was starting to change. In that match at least 2 decisions which were against Bangladesh was doubtful. Especially that ‘NO’ ball called off Rubel against Rohit Sharma who scored match-winning century made Bangladesh fans furious. Till now many fans believe that it was a conspiracy theory against Bangladesh but it wasn’t. From then on Social Media fans of both the countries made this a great rivalry. And After this WC, Bangladesh played a 3 match ODI series in their home against India. And fortunately, they won the first two games and didn’t give any chance to India in those two matches. A young Pacer named Mustafizur Rahman just destroyed Indian batting line up. After then every match Bangladesh and India played between each other, all of them were intense. And when Bangladesh face India they automatically pumped up. Every time these two teams played against each other we always expect a competitive Cricket match. And I must say this would be a great rivalry in Cricket. And one thing is sure that fans of both the countries have to more careful before showing their emotion.

Let’s recreate a dream XI of India and Bangladesh players only, you can choose the format and era of your liking.

Well, I am picking the Cricketers whom I have watched Live.
