Interview of Cricket Fans (ICF) – 24

Interviewing passionate Cricket fans and giving them a platform to express their opinions on particular topics is something that I have really started to enjoy doing it. My next guest is @ps26_11 who is a passionate fan of cricket and has been following this sport for a long time.

Thank You for your participation in this interview, tell us about your early memories of watching Cricket and how long have you been following this game?

Like most of the 90s kids, I’ve grown up watching all the legends like Tendulkar, Dravid, Ganguly, Sehwag, Yuvraj, Kumble, Bhajji, Zaheer etc. My earliest memories of watching cricket were from WC 2003 ~ Nehraji’s 6 wicket haul vs England, Sachin’s 98 vs Pakistan, Dada’s twin centuries (107* & 111*) vs Kenya followed by a heartbreak in Finals vs Australia. Earlier I used to watch only those matches in which India played. From 2013 I’m following international matches from every country & all T20 leagues across the globe.

Were you fortunate enough to watch a Cricket match live in a stadium?

Yes my first experience was in 2015. Watched the ranji match b/w Baroda & UP which included players like Rayudu, Pathan brothers, Munaf, Praveen kumar, RP, Chawla etc.UP ended up losing by 10 wickets. After that I’ve watched Duleep Trophy Final 2017 which was played with Pink ball (D/N format). Shaw, Dk, Sundar, Easwaran, Bhargav, Gohil were star performers. I was fortunate enough to witness the return of International cricket in Lucknow after 24 years, the 2nd T20 India vs Windies in 2018. Rohit scored a 111*(61) & Khaleel got a 5fer, we won by 71 runs. I missed Dhoni & Kohli as they were rested but the atmosphere in the stadium was electrifying.

Tell us what you like and dislike about Indian Cricket Team.

I like present Indian setup in both international & domestic structure. Kohli is doing great as a player and captian. His emphasis on fitness of the team is quite evident.I really hope we will win T20 & Odi WC under him alongwith few more away test series wins. We have a great set of youngsters who are yet to debut. Dislike is probably mixing formats while selecting a player and constant backing of underperforming players while neglecting other budding youngsters.

Who is your favourite Cricketer at the present moment? Tell us a bit about that player.

My favourite cricketer in Indian Cricket Team at the moment is KL Rahul. I think he have that ability to play all 3 formats. In Odis – He can open, play in middle, keep wickets too. He’s a team man. Reminds me of roles that Rahul Dravid used to do for the team
In T20s – He’s a gun opener. Can play shots all over the ground. Should open in T20 WC
In Tests – His technique is good. I’m pretty sure, he’ll make a comeback.

1983 or 2011 World Cup Final. Which is that one match you would opt to watch live in a stadium if you had a time machine ?

Tough to choose. 1983 inspired us for 2011. I remember my father told me that he turned off the radio during 83 finals, and he was shocked to know next day morning that we won. In 1983, we were underdogs but in 2011, we were favourites and no team have won WC that time while hosting the tournament itself. So, I want to watch the 2011 final. Want to witness Gambhir & Kohli’s fightback & that Dhoni six.

MS Dhoni recently retired, your thoughts on his captaincy stint with India and everything that he has achieved for India?

India will definitely miss his services. He’s the most successful Indian captain in while ball format. We won the 2007 T20WC, 2011 WC, Test mace, 2013 CT under him & many other series. His record as a captain in ICC tournaments speaks for itself. Best wicketkeeper batsman & finisher India ever produced. By the way he quit the test & odi captaincy, I was not surprised by his retirement. I knew the moment, we lost the WC19 semi final that MS will never don the blues again.

Your favourite IPL team?

My favourite IPL team is Sunrisers Hyderabad. I supported them earlier only because of Bhuvi but with time became a fan of Warner, Nabi & Rashid. We have players like Bairstow, Manish, Shankar & Samad now. I also like their team management think tank (Moody, VVS & Murali) & auction strategies.

Who is going to be the leading run scorer and wicket taker in this year’s IPL?

I want KL Rahul to be the leading run scorer in this season & Bhuvi to be the leading wicket taker as he’s making a comeback after injuries.

Let’s end this interview with your Dream team consisting of India players only.

My Dream Indian Test XI ~ Gavaskar, Sehwag, Dravid, Tendulkar, Kohli (c), Laxman, Dhoni (wk), Kapil Dev, Kumble, Ashwin, Zaheer

My Dream Indian Odi XI ~ Rohit, Sachin, Kohli (c), Yuvraj, Raina, Dhoni (wk), Kapil Dev, Irfan Pathan, Zaheer, Kumble, Bumrah
