The Sanjay Manjrekar Interview

August 24, and specially August 25, 2020 will be one of the most memorable dates for me personally because I got to interact with one of my favourite commentator – SANJAY MANJREKAR. I have always enjoyed listening to him commentate, not because I got the chance to interview him, but I still remember the game between India and South Africa – 5th match of ICC World T20, 2010 – where he said South Africa missed a trick by not giving Dale Steyn another over when Suresh Raina was looking edgy in the start of his innings. Ofcourse Raina went on to score a match winning hundred for India in that match but its these small things that shows how brilliantly Sanjay Manjrekar read the game sitting from the commentary box. The former Indian cricketer turned commentator spoke about his favourite Ranji team, favourite cricket ground in Mumbai, the bowler that troubled him the most during his early days and a lot more in this exclusive interview article.

Jay Bhavsar : Thank you so much sir for your participation in this interview, which is your favourite team in Ranji Trophy history?

Sanjay Manjrekar : Has to be Mumbai and then Delhi, tough opponents to beat during my time.

Jay Bhavsar : Which is your favourite ground in Mumbai where you enjoyed batting, apart from the Wankhede Stadium?

Sanjay Manjrekar : My favourite ground in Mumbai has to be PJ Hindu Gymkhana on Marine Drive.

Jay Bhavsar : Which bowler troubled you the most during your early days?

Sanjay Manjrekar : The bowler who troubled me the most was Harshad Joshi of Saurashtra during my under-19 days.

Jay Bhavsar : Which batting position did you enjoy the most?

Sanjay Manjrekar : Always liked opening, so also no. 3

Jay Bhavsar : Who is your favourite batsmen among these two – Wasim Jaffer and Amol Muzamdar?

Sanjay Manjrekar : Both the batsmen are my favourites but if I have to pick one, it has to be Wasim Jaffer.

Jay Bhavsar : Which is your favourite match where you enjoyed commentating the most?

Sanjay Manjrekar : My favourite match I enjoyed commentating the most was India vs Australia 2001 at Eden Gardens.

Jay Bhavsar : What is your all-time Mumbai XI?

Sanjay Manjrekar :

Wasim Jaffer
Lalchand Rajput
Sachin Tendulkar
Dilip Vengsarkar
Sandip Patil
Ravi Shastri
Chandu Pandit
Suru Nayak
Ajit Agarkar
Abey Kuruvilla
*Raju Kulkarni/Kiran Mokashi

* Seaming pitch – Kulkarni. Turning pitch – Mokashi

It was an absolute honour to be having a chat with Sanjay Manjrekar. It was good to know about his favourite Ranji team apart from Mumbai, his favourite batting position he enjoyed the most, his favourite match as a commentator and also his all-time XI in this article. Hope you enjoyed reading this short interview, if you liked it, do share it and also follow me on Twitter, my username is @bhavsarJ2_0 . THANK YOU.
